What if my baby doesn't sleep? | Brevard County Newborn Photographer

In my time as a newborn and maternity photographer with a studio in the Brevard County, it's common to encounter situations where a baby doesn't sleep during a session. Here are some tips and strategies to handle this scenario effectively:

Preparation and Communication

  1. Advise Parents Ahead of Time: I communicate with parents before the session about how to prepare their baby. Each parent receives a brief session prep guide with a few tips to hopefully help with the session process.

  2. Flexible Scheduling: Be prepared to adjust the session timing if the baby is wide awake. Sometimes a short break for feeding or cuddling can make all the difference.

During the Session

  1. Patience is Key: Stay calm and patient. Babies can sense stress, and remaining relaxed can help soothe them.

  2. Warm and Comfortable Environment: I ensure the studio is warm enough for the baby to feel comfortable. A cozy environment can help them relax and fall asleep.

  3. White Noise or Soft Music: My trusty Hatch is always playing gentle white noise or soft lullabies. It can help soothe the baby and create a peaceful atmosphere conducive to sleep. Do you need a Hatch in your life? Find them here! --> https://amzn.to/3ydsAIr

  4. Swaddling: Swaddling the baby can make them feel secure and mimic the feeling of being in the womb, which can help them sleep. I have great confidence in my swaddling, and it often does the trick!

  5. Feed and Change: If the baby is fussy, we may suggest to feed and change them. A well-fed and comfortable baby is more likely to sleep.

Adapting the Session

  1. Capture Awake Shots: If the baby remains awake, we will take advantage of it by capturing beautiful awake shots. These can be just as precious as sleeping poses. I often work so hard to get the baby to sleep, and then parents will absolutely love the awake moments we capture.

  2. Parent Interaction: Interaction shots can be some of my favorites! Holding, cuddling, and interacting with your baby can create beautiful and intimate images.

It's perfectly normal for babies to be awake and that I'm confident in capturing beautiful moments regardless.

By being adaptable and creative, we can have a successful newborn session even if the baby doesn't sleep as planned.

And lastly, just trust your photographer's experience, we also want the best photo's possible, and will work to do just that! | Rockledge Newborn and Maternity Photographer
